Niger

Malaria is endemic throughout Niger and accounts for 28 percent of illness and 50 percent of deaths, with children under age five accounting for 62 percent of cases. Elimination activities are paramount to the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI), focusing on the areas of vector control, human health, supply chain, and strategic information and systems strengthening.

PMI funded PMI Measure Malaria (PMM) to provide technical support to the National Malaria Control Program (NMCP) and Direction Statistique (DS) to undertake activities for improved data quality, analysis, and use. PMM activities in Niger included ensuring malaria surveillance, monitoring and evaluation (SME) technical working group meetings happen regularly and the outputs of the meetings are actionable and documented, organizing workshops to train NMCP staff on SME and the DHIS2 platform, and conducting joint supportive supervision visits in PMI-supported regions to identify and rectify data quality issues.
